Linux Basics

With many UNIX systems that are around, the user is unaware that the operating system is a UNIX system. Many companies have point-of-sales systems hooked up to a UNIX host. For example, the users at the cash register may never see what is being run. Therefore, there is really no need to go into details about the system other than for pure curiosity assuming that users find out that they are running on a UNIX system.

On the other hand, if you do have access to the command line or interact with the system by some other means, knowing how the system is put together is useful information. Knowing how things interact helps expand your knowledge. Knowing what's on your system is helpful in figuring out just what your system can do.

That's what this chapter is about: what's out there. We're going to talk about what makes up Linux. This brings up the question "What is Linux?" There are more than a dozen versions commercially available, in several different countries, all with their own unique characteristics. How can you call any one of them the Linux distribution?

The answer is you can't. What I will do instead is to synthesize all the different versions into a single pseudo-version that we can talk about. Although there are differences in the different versions, the majority of the components are the same. There has been a great deal of effort in the past few years to standardize Linux, with a great deal of success. I will therefore address this standard Linux and then mention those areas where specific versions diverge.

Introduction to Operating Systems

It is a common occurrence to find users who are not even aware of what operating system they are running. On occasion, you may also find an administrator who knows the name of the operating system, but nothing about the inner workings of it. In many cases, they have no time as they are often clerical workers or other personnel who were reluctantly appointed to be the system administrator.

Being able to run or work on a Linux system does not mean you must understand the intricate details of how it functions internally. However, there are some operating system concepts that will help you to interact better with the system. They will also serve as the foundation for many of the issues we're going to cover in this section.

In this chapter we are going to go through the basic composition of an operating system. First, we'll talk about what an operating system is and why it is important. We are also going to address how the different components work independently and together.

My goal is not to make you an expert on operating system concepts. Instead, I want to provide you with a starting point from which we can go on to other topics. If you want to go into more detail about operating systems, I would suggest Modern Operating Systems by Andrew Tanenbaum, published by Prentice Hall, and Operating System Concepts by Silberschatz, Peterson, and Galvin, published by Addison-Wesley. Another is Inside Linux by Randolph Bentson, which gives you a quick introduction to operating system concepts from the perspective of Linux.

Shells and Utilities

Most UNIX users are familiar with "the shell"; it is where you input commands and get output on your screen. Often, the only contact users have with the shell is logging in and immediately starting some application. Some administrators, however, have modified the system to the point where users never even see the shell, or in extreme cases, have eliminated the shell completely for the users.

Because the Linux GUI has become so easy to use, it is possible that you can go for quite a long time without having to input commands at a shell prompt. If your only interaction with the operating system is logging into the GUI and starting applications, most of this entire site can only serve to satisfy your curiosity. Obviously, if all you ever do is start a graphical application, then understanding about shell is not all that important. However, if you are like most Linux users, understanding the basic workings of the shell will do wonders to improve your ability to use the system to its fullest extent.

Up to this point, we have referred to the shell as an abstract entity. In fact, in most texts, it is usually referred to as simply "the shell", although there are many different shells that you can use, and there is always a program that must be started before you can interact with "the shell". Each has its own characteristics (or even quirks), but all behave in the same general fashion. Because the basic concepts are the same, I will avoid talking about specific shells until later.

In this chapter, we are going to cover the basic aspects of the shell. We'll talk about how to issue commands and how the system responds. Along with that, we'll cover how commands can be made to interact with each other to provide you with the ability to make your own commands. We'll also talk about the different kinds of shells, what each has to offer, and some details of how particular shells behave.

Virtualization Makes Traditional Operating Systems Obsolete

Will we ever move away from the traditional concepts and definitions of disk, memory, network and CPU for operating systems? We should move, instead, toward the concept of workloads. Every computing service is a workload—a new mail server becomes a new mail service workload, a new database server becomes a new data storage and retrieval workload and a new virtual desktop becomes a new virtual user interface workload. What we need is a simple workload container pseudo-operating system that makes traditional operating systems (OSs) obsolete.

Last week, I challenged virtualization software vendors and operating system developers to cooperate with one another and to create operating system versions that ship hypervisor-optimized and ready to run as virtual machines. Since I have no fear of this actually happening, I’m embracing the idea that what’s really needed are workload containers in which we’ll run our applications and services—with no operating system to hinder or complicate matters.

Why would you need a traditional OS to run a java application, a mail service, a database or any workload? Since most users access services over the network and never see the host OS, why should it exist? And, why would any of those workloads require either Linux or Windows? VMware proved that an OS isn’t necessary for a hypervisor host with their ESXi product, so OS-less guests aren’t a big stretch from there.

And I’m not talking about using some lame marketing ploy by simply renaming everything to make it sound more virtual but actually changing the way those services function to fit into these workload containers.

Can you envision a time when you’ll deploy a new workload to a set of users or on the web with a simple selection from a web-based pick list of services? It’s possible if you take away operating system specificity. Do users care about the operating system on which they’re working or where their files are stored? In most cases, they probably do not. Finally, function emerges as more important than form, thereby ushering in an age where vendor and platform specificity disappear into oblivion.

Deploying any workload becomes an act of “lever pulling” by a first or second level support jock who responds to routine ticket requests after all of the provisioning and change control matters are resolved by other individuals.

For example, a newly formed group of users requires a new file server with shared storage space. You could engage a System Administrator to install an OS onto a physical machine, configure the file shares, setup the users and send out an email with an explanation of the new service and instructions on how to access it. You could engage a System Administrator to deploy a new virtual machine and perform the same steps that you would for a physical machine. Or, you could engage that first or second level support person to select “New User Storage Service” from a pick list, allocate the required amount of storage space and identify the group who’ll have access and, presto; a new user file storage workload is born.

Virtual Desktops no longer exist (not that they ever did) but have morphed into what I call Virtual User Interfaces (VUI). The VUI is really just a list of virtual applications to which a user subscribes and accesses by virtue of his identity. A user whose job only requires the use of email, a web browser, a word processor and an occasional spreadsheet doesn’t need a fully licensed commercial OS.

Could it be this simple if we remove the OS factor? Yes, it could be.

Workloads will replace operating systems as virtualization and cloud computing pervades our data centers and our lives. Traditional operating systems are passé, heavy, cumbersome and are ready for museums and trivia games. Workloads are the future. Workloads are how computing is done. Workloads make traditional operating systems obsolete. Virtualization makes it possible.

On Monday March 30, Intel announced the availability of their much anticipated new line of processors, the Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 series–nicknamed Nehalem.

Red Hat, a long-time partner of the market-leading chip maker , collaborated on the chip’s debut, testing and optimizing the recently released Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 5.3 on the new processor.

Changes include a new processor architecture, platform architecture, memory subsystem, I/O subsystem, and options (including SSD and 10GbE).

So what’s the big deal? Why all the fuss? Here’s just a few of the improvements wrought by the combination of Intel’s processing power and Red Hat advancements in performance and efficiency.
Improved performance

According to Stream performance data, the new Intel Xeon 5500 series processor delivers a 2.25 times performance improvement, when compared to the performance of the preceding processor series (the Intel Xeon 5400). Red Hat Linux, assembled by the company Red Hat, was a popular Linux based operating system until its discontinuation in 2004.[1]

Red Hat Linux 1.0 was released on November 3, 1994. It was originally called "Red Hat Commercial Linux"[2] It was the first Linux distribution to use the RPM Package Manager as its packaging format, and over time has served as the starting point for several other distributions, such as Mandriva Linux and Yellow Dog Linux.

Since 2003, Red Hat has discontinued the Red Hat Linux line in favor of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for enterprise environments. Fedora, developed by the community-supported Fedora Project and sponsored by Red Hat, is the free version best suited for the home environment. Red Hat Linux 9, the final release, hit its official end-of-life on 2004-04-30, although updates were published for it through 2006 by the Fedora Legacy project until that shut down in early 2007
Features

Version 3.0.3 was one of the first Linux distributions to support Executable and Linkable Format instead of the older a.out format.[4]

Red Hat Linux introduced a graphical installer called Anaconda, intended to be easy to use for novices, and which has since been adopted by some other Linux distributions. It also introduced a built-in tool called Lokkit for configuring the firewall capabilities.

In version 6 Red Hat moved to glibc 2.1, egcs-1.2, and to the 2.2 kernel.[5] It also introduced Kudzu, a software library for automatic discovery and configuration of hardware.[6]

Versions 7 was released in preparation for the 2.4 kernel, although the first release still used the stable 2.2 kernel. Glibc was updated to version 2.1.92, which was a beta of the upcoming version 2.2 and Red Hat used a patched version of GCC from CVS that they called "2.96".[7] The decision to ship an unstable GCC version was due to GCC 2.95's bad performance on non-i386 platforms, especially DEC Alpha[8]. Newer GCCs had also improved support for the C++ standard, which caused much of the existing code not to compile.

In particular, the use of a non-released version of GCC caused some criticism, ie. from Linus Torvalds'[9] and The GCC Steering Committee[10]; Red Hat was forced to defend their decision.[11] GCC 2.96 failed to compile the Linux kernel, and some other software used in Red Hat, due stricter checks. It also had an incompatible C++ ABI with other compilers. The distribution included a previous version of GCC for compiling the kernel, called "kgcc".

As of Red Hat Linux 8.0, UTF-8 was enabled as the default character encoding for the system. This had little effect on English-speaking users, but enabled much easier internationalisation and seamless support for multiple languages, including ideographic, bi-directional and complex script languages along with European languages. However, this did cause some negative reactions among existing Western European users, whose legacy ISO-8859-based setups were broken by the change[citation needed].

Version 8.0 was also the second to include the Bluecurve desktop theme. It used a common theme for GNOME-2 and KDE 3.0.2 desktops, as well as OpenOffice-1.0. KDE members did not appreciate the change, claiming that it was not in the best interests of KDE.[12]

Version 9 supported the Native POSIX Thread Library, which was ported to the 2.4 series kernels by Red Hat.[13]

Red Hat Linux lacked many features due to possible copyright and patent problems. For example, MP3 support was disabled in both Rhythmbox and XMMS; instead, Red Hat recommended using Ogg Vorbis, which has no patents. MP3 support, however, could be installed afterwards, although royalties are required everywhere MP3 is patented.[citation needed] Support for Microsoft's NTFS file system was also missing, but could be freely installed as well.
Fedora
Red Hat Linux was originally developed exclusively inside Red Hat, with the only feedback from users coming through bug reports and contributions to the included software packages – not contributions to the distribution as such. This was changed in late 2003 when Red Hat Linux merged with the community-based Fedora Project. The new plan is to draw most of the codebase from Fedora when creating new Red Hat Enterprise Linux distributions. Fedora replaces the original Red Hat Linux download and retail version.[citation needed] The model is similar to the relationship between Netscape Communicator and Mozilla, or StarOffice and OpenOffice.org, although in this case the resulting commercial product is also fully free software.

Internet giant Yahoo officially launched the new face of their portal today. Supported advertising costs of U.S. $ 100 million, the company is hoping the new faces could increase traffic and revenue.

On the new portal, Yahoo users can integrate third-party web services, such as Facebook and Hotmail.

Sony Denies PS3 its Problems

Japanese game giant, Sony denies claims watchdog called BBC Watchdog mentioning that the PlayStation 3 has a disability which besutannya marked by a technical failure of the so-called "yellow light of death."

The statement was aired on the BBC Watchdog program that displays three technicians to test the operation of the PS3. At the time of testing, they showed that there are a number of failures found in the solder that connects the engine components inside the PS3.

But Sony said it did not hinder the performance of the PS3 and testing conducted Watchdog BBC can not be used as a standard to conclude that their device is problematic.

"We feel very unfair to the rapid rate that a problem with our product. There needs to be other evidence and further testing that could confirm these conclusions," said Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Sony UK, Ray Maguire.

"The term 'yellow light of death' has now been adopted by a number of online communities to discuss and describe the dead PS3 system followed by the appearance of yellow light illumination on the front panel of the PS3," he added.

Maguire also mentioned, the yellow light just kegagagalan technical indicators that are not specific and can be translated in a variety of possibilities.

Meanwhile, the BBC's Watchdog insisted they had to present the facts fairly and accurately to show weakness PS3.

"We've done a fair assessment and accurate data we get from qualified personnel. We would then broadcast the response from the Sony itself," said a spokesman for the BBC's Watchdog.

Smart Leaf Originatic wall-mounted PC gets a patent

Wall-mountable computers could be better choice, if you have a tiny apartment that has limited space. The Originatic’s wall-mountable computer that was displayed at CES in January this year, has now been awarded a new patent.

The Originatic’s wall-mountable computer is being marketed by Smart Leaf. The wall-mounted design comes with a fold-out keyboard, which can be folded up for storage while it’s not in use. The computer itself is also switchable between a desktop and a laptop mode, by little changes in position.

This wall-mounted computer can be used as a kiosk as well, as it occupies no space. But it’s little more costly than an average computer, costs $1,982, comes with pretty impressive features including a touchscreen display, webcam, WiFi, scratch resistance, splash-proofing, keyboard lock, and power lock etc. And the most interesting is it’s got a built-in TV tuner which allows you to tune into TV signals, allowing it to be used like an HDTV on your wall. But there is no info whether the graphics card and display are HD-capable.

Currently, the SmartLeaf wall-mounted PC has got 7 active patents and is pending for 17 in about 12 countries. Apparently, this wall-mounted computer is best used in places like hotels, hospitals etc to allow people to look for information easily.

Toyota Goes Green

Toyota is set to launch more cars that use no gas at all. With the green campaign all over the world, Toyota rides with the environmental demand by coming up with cars that use only compressed natural gas car fuel (CNG).

CNG is more available than hydrogen as Irv Miller, manufacturer’s group VP for corporate communications, said. It has a pipeline that reaches 1.8 million miles in the United States. Though rare, since it only has 1,000 refueling stations all through US, it still has more than the approximately 10 hydrogen refill stations.

Toyota is even planning to release a Prius plug-in version for the fleet market around 2009. This will, of course, be greener.

With the issue of global warming, gasoline-mobilized automobiles face an environmental challenge. But even manufacturers with alternatives have their own challenges to face. For one, the said availability of CNG refilling stations can be a reason why potential buyers will think twice.

In 1999, Toyota launched their CNG-fueled Camry. The major challenge for the manufacturer was finding buyers since at that time gas still cost low. Honda even built their own CNG-fueled cars but faced similar challenges.

Toyota Freezes Prius Production in the US

The board of executives of Toyota Motors Corporation in Japan decides to halt its production of the Prius in the United States. The decision comes amid lowering prices of fuel resulting to a slump in sales of the hybrid car.

Up to when the Prius project will be frozen is still not known. What is evident is the 32% drop in sales that Toyota experience in November of 2008.

Prius sales dramatically dropped year over year coming from 16737 units sold in November of 2007 to just 8660 cars in 2008.

The Tupelo, Mississippi Toyota Plant which is the heart of the production plans in the US has an estimated cost of $1.3 billion. The building is 90% complete but the decision comes before ordering equipment that will go into the car plant.

The Tupelo assembly line is originally planned to build Highlander crossovers but this was discarded when the sales of SUVs dropped because of increasing fuel prices. The course of action was focused on producing Prius hybrids to answer the needs of the market.

The situation reflects the growing pressure on the global earnings of the Japanese car maker. The company aims to hit $6.6 billion of profit amid the reduction in production. This will be done by lowering the number of temporary employees in Japan, holding construction of car plants, and reduction of salary and bonuses of the top bosses.

Toyota has several factory constructions going on aside from the US project. It is planning to increase its production in China and is also building its presence in India and Brazil.

Toyota A-BAT Production on the Shelf for Now

No matter how the Toyota A-BAT concept caught the spotlight during the 2008 Detroit Motor Show, the hybrid pickup will be remaining a concept vehicle for Toyota A-BATnow according to Toyota insiders.

It was a good bet for a production vehicle but Toyota executives point out that they have a lot of priorities at the moment and building the A-BAT is not on top of their list.

The A-BAT was close to reality when the Japanese car manufacturer asked for bids from potential suppliers for the hybrid version and four cylinder variant of the truck. The light never went green though for the bulky futuristic vehicle.

The decision of the company may have been influenced by the dismal performance of their two pickups which have suffered from the drop in housing and construction. Toyota only sold 18349 units of the Tundra which is a 55% drop in 1Q sales. The Tacoma was also a laggard performer in the market with first quarter sales dropping as much as 37% or translating to only 24937 units sold.

Toyota executives assure the public that they are committed to meet the demand for the Tundra although the sales are greatly dependent on the construction industry.

The A-BAT was first thought to be entering the market as a Scion but the market’s focus on acquiring smaller vehicles proved to be an emphatic contrast to the possibility.

The market’s demands have changed drastically in the last twelve months and Toyota aims to adapt and adjust their priorities to meet the needs of the consumers. For now, they do not see the A-BAT selling in these recessionary times.

Toyota needs $1 billion to abide by stricter California regulations

Automakers are in a scramble to fix their budget and comply with stricter emission and fuel mileageToyota Emissions regulations that will be in effect across the nation. The state of California is also setting tougher requirements. Japanese car maker Toyota is also studying a tough goal of 3% of its total 2012 sales that should come from zero emission units.

The company estimates that they will need about $1 billion to follow all the new industry rules from the federal government and California.

California requires manufacturers that sell more than 60000 vehicles in a year to have 3% of the units as zero emissions. This puts automakers like Toyota, Ford, and Honda in a no choice position because of the state legislation.

Chrysler and General Motors will also have to follow the new rules but do not require as much budget considering that the other car makers share the bigger chunk of the market.

The needed $1 billion of funding can be broken down into production of components needed for building the electric vehicles, equipment, and service centers. They also have to consider things like training of the manpower, marketing, and coverage for the vehicle’s guarantees and warranties.

Agar laptop dapat awet pastikan laptop selalu pada kondisi yang aman dari panas,ventilasi aliran udara kipas yang bagus dikarenakan laptop sangat rentan terhadap debu dan panas, banyak masalah laptop yang terjadi dikarenakan masalah panas ini. Jangan gunakan laptop di tempat tidur atau tempat yang memiliki permukaan yang lembut dikarenakan permukaan yang lembut mengakibatkan ketika laptop diletakkan diatasnya akan menutup aliran udara pada bawah laptop sehingga laptop akan menjadi panas karena tidak ada aliran udara.Ini juga berpengaruh kepada kerusakan pada kipas laptop maupun hardisk laptop.Selain itu jangan juga menaruh laptop di lantai,karena permukaan lantai yang sedikit kasar juga dapat merusak dan menggores permukaan bawah laptop anda serta kipas juga dapat menyedot debu-debu yang terdapat pada lantai.

3. Agar baterai dapat awet untuk pemakaian yang lama dan kecenderungan listrik stabil tidak mati hidup,lebih baik baterai dilepaskan saja agar baterai tidak diisi terus oleh listrik, dan jangan paksakan baterai dalam kondisi habis benar kalau sudah hampir habis pastikan laptop dimatikan atau segera dicharge jangan sampai menunggu mati sendiri karena kehabisan batere. Kalau bisa ketika mencharge dalam kondisi mati dan apabila sudah penuh segera dicabut, biasanya laptop memiliki indikator lampu yang dapat kita gunakan sebagai tanda penuh atau tidaknya baterai sebuah laptop.

4. Gunakan cover atau pembungkus laptop (tas laptop) agar laptop tidak rusak karena terbentur apabila dibawa.Usahakan cover maupun tas laptop agar sesuai dengan ukuran laptop anda,karena tas atau cover yang sedikit sempit pun juga dapat menggores permukaan laptop.Begitu pun sebaliknya,tas yang terlalu kebesaran dari ukuran laptop nya juga dapat tergoyang-goyang karena ruang yang kosong pada tas tersebut,dan dapat berakibat membuat hardisk anda terkocok-kocok dan rusak.Selain itu juga pastikan ketika membawa jangan sampai kegencet karena tas yang penuh, ini dapat merusak LCD anda.

Its off-road bikes and roadracers have won world titles, and its street machines range from the cruiser Boulevard series to the legendary GSX-R series of sportbikes. It, along with Honda, is unique in that the company also builds automobiles.

Michio Suzuki founds the Suzuki Loom Company in Hamamatsu, Japan. He builds industrial looms for the thriving Japanese silk industry.

1937
To diversify activities, the company experiments with several interesting small car prototypes, but none go into production because the Japanese government declares civilian automobiles “non-essential commodities” at the onset of WWII.

1951
After the war, Suzuki (like Honda and others) begins making clip-on motors for bicycles.

1953
The Diamond Free is introduced and features double-sprocket wheel mechanism and two-speed transmission.

1955
The Colleda COX debuts, a 125cc bike equipped with a steel frame. It features a 4-stroke OHV single-cylinder engine with three-speed transmission.

1961
East German star Ernst Degner defects to the west while racing for MZ in the Swedish Grand Prix. He takes MZ’s most valuable secret – knowledge of Walter Kaaden’s expansion chamber designs – to Suzuki.

1962
Using MZ’s technology, Suzuki wins the newly created 50cc class in the World Championship. The company will win the class every year until ’67, and win the 125cc class twice in that period, too.

1963
U.S. Suzuki Motor Corp. opens in Los Angeles.

1965
The T20 is released (aka Super 6, X-6, Hustler). This two-stroke, street-going Twin is one of the fastest bikes in its class. The ‘6’ in its name(s) refers to its six-speed gearbox.

1968
The T500 ‘Titan’ is an air-cooled parallel-Twin two-stroke.

1970
Joel Robert wins the 250cc World Motocross Championship for Suzuki. This is the first year of a three-year streak.

1971
The GT750 2-stroke surprises people with its three-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. In North America, it’s nicknamed the Water Buffalo; in the UK they call them Kettles. Although the bike is quite advanced in many ways and inspires a line of smaller air-cooled triples (GT380 and GT550), it’s clear that pollution control legislation will limit the use of two-strokes as street motorcycles. Even while the GT750 was in development, Suzuki had signed a licensing deal with NSU to develop a motorcycle with a Wankel (rotary) engine.

The TM400A motocrosser goes into production, a 396cc bike designed for 500cc motocross races. Roger Decoster wins the 500cc World Championship on the factory version of this bike and will dominate the class, winning five times from 1971-’76.

1972
The Hustler 400, a street version of the TM400, is released. This bike features a double-cradle frame and 2-stroke single-cylinder 396cc engine.

1974
The RE5 is the first Japanese motorcycle with a rotary engine. It cost a fortune to develop and, while not bad, it’s a commercial disaster. After two years, the company abandons the project, and there are rumors the tooling was dumped into the sea so that Suzuki managers would never have to see it again.

1975
The RM125, with an air-cooled 2-stroke single-cylinder 123cc engine, is a production motocrosser

1976
With the GS750, Suzuki finally builds a 4-stroke, four-cylinder road bike.

1978
The GS1000E becomes the flagship model of the GS series – it’s Suzuki’s first literbike.

1979
Wes Cooley wins the AMA Superbike Championship on the new GS. He’ll repeat the feat in ’80 before submitting to Eddie Lawson.

1980
The GSX750E adopts Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber (TSCC) structure and a DOHC engine upgraded to four valves. Also, a new Anti Nose Dive Fork (ANDF) system is adopted for the front suspension.

Somewhere in Japan, Suzuki appoints a Vice President of Acronyms for Suzuki’s Success (V-PASS).

1981
German designer Hans A. Muth, styles the GSX1100S Katana. It boasts an output of 111 hp at 8,500 rpm.

Marco Lucchinelli wins the 500cc World Championship for Suzuki.

1982
Franco Uncini wins the 500cc World Championship.

1983
The RG250 is Suzuki’s first ever race replica. This bike features the AL-BOX, square aluminum frame, 16-inch tire and Anti Nose Dive Forks (ANDF) at the front.

1985
The RG500 “Gamma” features the same square-Four cylinder layout as the as the factory Grand Prix bikes. Other racy features are the square-tube aluminum frame and the removable cassette-type transmission.

1986
Although the rest of the world got the GSX-R750 a year earlier, the most important new motorcycle in a decade finally arrives in the U.S. in 1986. Kevin Cameron, reviewing the machine in Cycle World, rhetorically asks, “Where will we go from here?”

The new GSX-R1100 covers ¼ mile in 10.3 seconds and boasts a top speed of over 160 mph. That’s where we go from here.

1989
Jamie James wins the AMA Superbike Championship of the GSX-R750.

1990
The 779cc DR-BIG has the largest single-cylinder engine in living memory.

1991
The GSX-R750 switches from oil-cooling to water-cooling and gains weight.

1993
Kevin Schwantz wins the 500cc World Championship. “I’d rather not win it this way,” he says, referring to the career-ending injury of his arch-rival Wayne Rainey.

1995
The much-loved 16-valve, 1156cc air/oil-cooled Bandit 1200 appears on the scene.

1996
Suzuki calls the new GSX-R750 the ‘turning-point model’ thanks to its twin-spar frame instead of the older double-cradle frame. The engine is also redesigned and featured 3-piece crankcases, chrome-plated cylinders and a side-mount cam chain as well as Suzuki Ram Air Direct (SRAD) system.

1997
The TL1000S is the first Suzuki sportbike with a V-Twin engine. It will be followed a year later by a racier R version, with a dodgy rotary vane damping system in the rear shock. Suzuki equipped the TL1000R with a steering damper, but it was still prone to headshake and customers approached it with caution, if at all.

1999
Mat Mladin wins the AMA Superbike Championship, beginning a run of unprecedented dominance. Mladin will win five more times, and Suzuki will win 8 of the next 9 titles.

With sport bikes getting more and more sharp edged, the company is one of the first to recognize what might be called the ‘semi-sport’ market, as opposed to the supersport market. The SV650 features an aluminum-alloy truss frame and a liquid-cooled 90° V-Twin DOHC 4-valve engine.

Suzuki calls the Hayabusa the ultimate aerodynamic sportbike. It’s powered by a 1298cc liquid-cooled DOHC in-line 4-cylinder engine that becomes the darling of land-speed racers. The name means “peregrine falcon” in Japanese.

2001
Based on the compact GSX-R750, the GSX-R1000 is powered by a liquid-cooled DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder 988cc engine, which features narrow-angle valves and downdraft individual throttle-body fuel injection.

2005
Suzuki’s original 4-stroke motocrosser, the RM-Z450, is equipped with a 4-stroke 449cc engine, which features the Suzuki Advanced Sump System (SASS).

Troy Corser gives Suzuki its first and only (so far) World Superbike Championship.

2006
The M109R, Suzuki’s flagship V-Twin cruiser, is powered by a 1783cc V-Twin engine with 112mm bore and 90.5mm stroke. It has the largest reciprocating pistons in any production passenger car or motorcycle.

2008
The B-King is launched, powered by the 1340cc Hayabusa engine, the B-King is Suzuki’s flagship big ‘Naked’ bike. Suzuki says it has the top-ranked power output in the naked category.

CIMA Motor Show

In our recent tests of the Chinese-manufactured Johnny Pag Motorcycles, we wrote: “If you turned around the appliances in your kitchen, you’d see several “Made in China” stickers. Inevitably, the stuff in garages across North America will one day be displaying a similar country of origin.”

With the impending onslaught of Chinese bikes on its way to our shores, we figured it would be interesting to delve deeper into the Sino-moto industry. That’s why I’m here in Chongqing, China, for the CIMA Motor Show.

Although many North Americans probably haven’t heard of Chongqing (pronounced Chong-ching), the burgeoning industrial city is the center of motorcycle production in China. There will be 400-some-odd manufacturers at the show, so I’m going to be busy.

2010 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Custom Review

Harley-Davidson kills its competition in the touring-cruiser marketplace, outselling all others by a huge margin. In fact, it hogs (pun intended) about 70% of the touring market with yearly sales over the past few years approaching the 100K mark.

For the 2009 model year, H-D transformed its venerable FLH line of touring bikes into vastly improved machines, thanks mostly to a much stiffer frame. Too bad that a slumping economy will cut into sales of the '09 models.

However, this is still a huge market, and The Motor Company has already made a few tweaks to some of its popular touring models for 2010. We rode them around magnificent Colorado to find out how they work. Stay tuned also for a quick ride review of the new Electra Glide Ultra Limited luxury-tourer.

The new Road Glide Custom is an appealing blend of cruiser, tourer and sport.

As we learned from data shown to us at the Star Stratoliner Deluxe unveiling, the “casual full-dress” segment of touring cruisers is enjoying ever-increasing popularity, and this is largely due to Harley's Street Glide and Road Glide. Both baggers are updated for 2010 and share a retail price of $18.999.

The Road Glide's steering is unaffected by its boxy, frame-mounted fairing.

Wind protection for a rider's torso is excellent, but it doesn't provide much deflection in the helmet area.

The RG and SG both receive a 1-inch-larger 18-inch aluminum front wheel wearing a lower-profile 130/70-18 tire and a new two-into-one exhaust system instead of the old dual-outlet pipes. Color-matched saddlebag latches and space-filling inserts between the bags and rear fender are other clues you're looking at a 2010 model. Both retain the ubiquitous rubber-mounted 96-inch Twin-Cam motor and 6-speed Cruise Drive tranny, the latter revised for quieter running in fifth gear.

While the Street Glide uses the archetypal bat-wing fairing mounted to the handlebar, the Road Glide is distinguished by its unique boxy fairing that looks like a refugee from the 1970s – it's so outdated that it's cool again! The RG receives the addition of the “Custom” suffix for 2010, and with that also comes a rear suspension lowered by 1 inch to yield a 26.3-inch seat height.

Revised trim for the dual headlamps (without the previous bike's headlight cover) and a dark windshield provide an updated face for the RG. The rear end is cleaned up with a combined LED brake/tail/turn light setup and a “Tri-line” LED rear fender light at its tip. Interestingly, unlike the SG, the RGC has no tank badge, just a cleared-over decal.

Straddling the Road Glide, a rider is greeted by a fairing that is visually massive from the cockpit. Nestled neatly inside is a Harman-Kardon 40-watt audio system (with CD player and MP3 input) and a pair of storage bins. The pleasingly familiar lope of Harley's 45-degree V-Twin rumbles beneath, and the sounds coming out the new tailpipe are just as pleasingly burly. Throttle response is excellent.

The fairings of the SG and the RGC are the primary difference between the two baggers, not only their appearance but also the way they are mounted. The Street Glide's bat-wing is attached to the fork, while the Road Glide's more substantial fairing is frame-mounted. The RG feels slightly more agile at low speeds because its fairing is separated from steering inputs, but both are fairly nimble for 800-pounders with 63.5-inch wheelbases. Full of fluids and fuel, the RGC is purported to scale in at 805 lbs, 5 lbs less than the SG.

A new seat sourced from the Street Glide seemed reasonably comfortable during our short stints in the saddle, although its passenger perch seems less than generous. “Streamliner” foot controls are placed further forward than the Electra Glide, and the passenger floorboards are height-adjustable. Controls are typical Harley, augmented by a handy (optional) cruise control integrated into the right-side hand controls. The stainless steel handlebar has a flatter bend than the more reclined tube on the EG.

Seen here is one of Harley-Davidson's new jackets that includes an exclusive reflective material from 3M. Typical reflective material emits a candlepower rating of 30 to 50. H-D's reflective rating is 200, making it highly visible at night and extending its visible range from 150 feet to 500 feet!

Once past a brisk walking pace, the Glides prove to be surprisingly agile and fun to ride. Grip from the Dunlop tires exceeds the available cornering clearance, said to be 32 degrees on the right and 29 degrees on the left, and the 180/65-16 rear uses dual-compound construction alleged to offer 25% greater durability. The rear suspension is air-adjustable to suit loads of various weights, and the resulting ride quality isn't much compromised despite 1 inch less travel (to 3.0 inches).

The Road Glide Custom is surprisingly sporty for a Big Twin touring rig.

Instrumentation is fairly comprehensive. A chrome console atop the 6.0-gallon fuel tank includes a tachometer, and various gauges relay info for fuel, oil pressure, voltage and ambient air temperature. It was pleasant to have the accompaniment of mobile tunes, although highways speeds can drown out the audio. Wind protection is a nice compromise of open-air motoring and relieving shelter.

While riding the Road Glide, I couldn't help but draw comparisons to a big American car. This is a machine for cruising, and it has good performance within its intended usage. It's like a Buick but in a good way. Self-canceling turnsignals are a nice feature, especially for the Leisure World set. A trio of 300mm discs provide decent but unspectacular speed bleeding, despite the high-end dual Brembo 4-piston calipers up front. Anti-lock is an $845 option.

Like everything from The Motor Company, the Glides offer impeccable finishes and artful details. The engine is dressed up with a plethora of chrome bits glistening against the black powder-coated cases, and the new rear-end treatment is very classy.

In fact, both the Street and Road Glides might be Harley's best attempts at balancing premium style with highly usable function. Among H-D's offerings, they're favorites of both Pete and I.

Live out your fireman fantasies on this Scarlet Red/Vivid Black Road Glide Custom, a $480 option over the base Vivid Black paintwork.

Although starting at $19K in Vivid Black, the Road Glide Custom's price bumps up to $19,479 for the Scarlet Red and Black Denim color options. Add optional equipment (ABS; cruise control for $295; and a security system for $370), and the price can reach $20,989.

It's intriguing to imagine how the new Road Glide Custom might match up with Victory's new Cross Country and Star Motorcycles' new Stratoliner Deluxe. Stay tuned for a bagger brouhaha!

Harus tahu caranya

Pemilik Honda Vario yang suka bongkar atau servis skubeknya sendiri, musti waspada. Terutama, ketika membersihkan karburator. Hati-hati melepas part di peranti pengabut bahan bakar itu. Utamanya, choke alias cuk.

"Ada konsumen datang dan mengeluh kalau cuknya bermasalah. Itu setelah dia coba servis sendiri atau dari bengkel yang kurang paham soal cuk itu," ungkap Jhony Holle, owner JHM (Jhony Holle Motor) di Jl. Karya Barat II, Gg. 2, No. 56, Daan Mogot, Jakarta Barat.

Masalahnya, cuk Vario bisa dikatakan tipe otomatis. Memfungsikan cuk tidak perlu pakai mekanis atau tuas. Tapi berfungsi dengan sendirinya ketika suhu mesin dingin.

Selain itu, desainnya dibuat khusus. Maka itu, perlakuan untuk melepasnya musti tahu langkah. Jangan sembarang lepas. "Main cabut aja, pasti ada masalah. Misal, ketika dipaksa dilepas, ada part yang hilang. Sebut saja, per. Atau bisa juga plastik penahan skep patah," ungkapnya.

Mengenai hal ini, Sarwono Edhi siap buka pendapat. "Sebenarnya desain cuk di Honda Vario itu dibuat nyaris free maintenance atau bebas perawatan. Jadi ketika tidak perlu untuk dibuka, ya jangan dibuka," ujar pria yang menjabat Technical Service Division PT Astra Honda Motor.

Begitunya ketika ingin membuka, ada trik khusus yang musti dilakukan. Terlebih lagi menurut Edhi yang ramah itu, cuk vario ini dilengkapi dengan O-ring berbahan karet, berfungsi untuk menjaga kevakuman.

"Maka itu, melepasnya sedikit seret. Karena karet itu memang menjaga kerapatan jarum cuk dari udara yang masuk," bilang pria berkacamata ini. Melepasnya, disarankan musti dalam posisi karburator terlepas dari dudukan atau intake.

Setelah itu, posisi kabel atau cuk musti lurus. Jangan miring! Kalau miring, bisa sebabkan posisi cuk malah sulit dilepas. Efek lainnya juga, jarum bisa patah karena tidak dalam keadaan lurus.

Jika jarum itu patah, ada konsekuensi yang ditimbulkan. "Pastinya campuran akan kaya. Prinsipnya, jarum itu membuka ketika mesin dingin. Fungsinya memperkaya bahan bakar dan menutup setelah suhu mesin naik hingga stasioner," kata pria ramah berkacamata ini.

Artinya, kalau patah malah boros bensin dong. Perlu ati-ati

Trik Mencegah Installasi Otomatis

Saya sendiri sering melakukan kesalahan yang tidak saya sengaja, namun hal ini terus terjadi seperti tiba-tiba saja software yang saya tidak kenal tiba-tiba terinstall ke hard disk di komputer saya. Ini terjadi karena kurang telitinya saya dan kadangkala tidak sengaja kita sudah klik sesuatu yang mengharuskan software tertentu terinstall pada komputer kita.

Mungkin anda juga pernah mengalami hal yang sama seperti yang saya alami di atas, kadang tiba-tiba muncul popup yang menginginkan software tersebut di install dan secara tidak sengaja kita klik OK maka software tersebutpun dengan mudah terinstall di komputer anda, dan biasanya software yang terinstall sendiri itu diperoleh dari internet. Baik kalau itu merupakan software yang dibutuhkan, bagaimana kalau bukan software yang dibutuhkan melainkan virus, spyware atau gangguan internet lainnya bisa berantakan bukan ?

Memang sih trik ini tidak menjamin penuh keamanan namun apa salahnya kalau dicoba daripada tidak sama sekali, lebih baik mengurangi daripada tidak sama sekali bukan ?

Begini caranya, berhubung sistem operasi windows sudah memiliki security yang cukup sehingga kita memanfaatkan windows sebagai pelindung kita dalam menggunakan internet, dimana untuk melakukan installasi software pada sistem operasi windows dan yang berhak adalah seorang administrator.

Jadi untuk menghindari software yang diinstallasi tanpa ijin, kita tidak boleh login pada windows menggunakan akun administrator pada saat menggunakan koneksi internet.

Buatkan satu akun baru dengan type akunya Limited, dengan akun inilah anda login saat menggunakan koneksi internet untuk menghindari software yang tidak sengaja terinstall ke hard drive.

Maksimalkan Kopling

Akselerasi standar Yamaha Scorpio sudah mumpuni. Dari pabriknya, si Kalajengking ini sudah dibekali kapasitas mesin 225 cc. Namun akselerasi masih bisa dimaksimalkan tanpa harus menyentuh bagian ruang bakar atau seputar kepala silinder. "Dengan sedikit sentuhan pada rumah kopling, power Scorpio standar bisa lebih teriak dan menyentak," jelas Ari Supriyono, mekanik dari bengkel Protehnics di Jl. Rempoa Raya, Ciputat, Tangerang.

Tentu ada beberapa modifikasi yang harus dilakukan. Terutama pada part yang ada di rumah kopling. "Intinya kopling harus mereduksi sekecil mungkin gejala selip putaran mesin," lanjut Ari lagi.

Langkah pertama yaitu mengganti per kopling standar Yamaha Scorpio. Setelah beberapa kali mencoba berbagai pegas kopling, menurut Ari yang paling cocok yaitu pakai per kopling Honda Tiger. Ini lantaran bahan yang dipakai dan punya diameter lebih besar. selain itu juga, memiliki ulir lebih rapat.

Buat pasang per kopling Tiger ini harus ada penyesuaian lebih dulu. Sebab diameter per lebih besar. "Dudukan pegas pada tutup rumah kopling lubangnya harus dibuat lebih lebar. Tiap lubang diameternya di besaran 1,5 mm," jelas mekanik yang juga punya tim grastrack ini.

Langkah selanjutnya bikin sirkulasi oli pada areal rumah kopling. "Berfungsi agar aliran oli pada rumah kopling merata dan seluruh kampas kopling terlumasi oli. Cara ini juga untuk menghindari kampas kopling mudah hangus ketika mesin berkitir," lanjut Ari yang spesialis modifikasi trail juga.

Carannya buat lubang tambahan. Yaitu pada kuku rumah kopling menggunakan mata bor diameter cukup 1,5 mm. Sedang pada bagian tutup rumah kopling, juga ikut dilubangi. Tapi, pakai mata bor berukuran lebih kecil pada beberapa lokasi.

Kalau sudah dilubangi, tinggal rakit kembali deh tuh rumah kopling. Sekadar mengingatkan, efek dari penggatian per kopling Honda Tiger bikin kopling akan sedikit lebih keras. Itu lantaran per kopling Tiger memang lebih rapat ketimbang punya Scorpio. "Tapi masih dalam batas normal. Yang pasti, entakan power benar terasa bedanya," yakin Ari.

Mau coba?

Jangan Takut Kampas Habis

Informasi tentang teknologi Combi Brake System (CBS) di Honda Vario Techno pasti sudah pada ngerti. Namun banyak yang memprediksi kalau keberadaan CBS tadi malah bikin bahaya? Apa sebab?

Seperti kekhawatiran Ucil, mekanik dari Sahara Motor di Jl. KH. Mas Mansyur, Kunciran, Tangerang. Katanya kalau kampas rem belakang sudah habis, CBS bisa bikin cilaka.

Ucil bilang, jika kampas rem belakang habis, yang menekan hanya rem depan maski tuas kiri yang ditarik. Jadinya malah bahaya jika melintas di jalanan berpasir. “Bisa gedubrak lantaran rem depan ngunci,” argumen Ucil yang bukan temanya Unyil itu.

"Jika posisi jarum penunjuk sudah ada di belakang tanda atau melewati batas tanda pada saat tuas rem ditarik penuh, diharapakan kepada konsumen untuk segera mengganti kampas rem belakang dengan yang baru," anjurnya.

Tapi jika posisi jarum penunjuk masih ada di tengah, namun kemampuan pengereman belakang sudah mulai berkurang bagaimana? Disarankan untuk penyetelan ulang mur penahan batang pengait atau paha ayam yang ada di ujung kabel rem. Alhasil, jarak main tuas rem belakang akan kembali seperti semula dan nggak terlalu dalam.

"Kenapa harus diseting kembali, sebab saat ganti kampas rem belakang kan semua peranti harus dicopot, termasuk mur adjuster. Tujuannya agar proses pemasangan lebih mudah dan ketika dipasang kembali, jarak main knocker joint sudah pada posisinya," pesan Handy Hariko lagi.

Hanya saja jika konsumen tidak yakin dengan setingan mur adjuster, ada baiknya minta bantun mekanik yang ahli. Hal ini mengingat jarak main knocker joint dengan equalizer sangat mempengaruhi kemampuan kerja CBS secara keseluruhan.
